You can Receive Your BA and MA in English With Our Combined-Degree Program

The GW English Department is 
Accepting Applications for the 

An MA in English is a wonderful degree which affords graduates numerous opportunities. Our students have gone on to very promising careers in editing, law, marketing, and technology, just to name a few.
Students who wish to pursue their MA in English have an opportunity with this program to start fulfilling graduate level coursework during their senior year. Usually, students take one graduate class per semester during the final year of their BA, and in a fifth year, students take a total of 8 graduate classes. 

Upon completion, students graduate from GW with both their Bachelors and Masters degrees in English.  In addition, students participate in a portfolio review of selected graduate papers written during their career in the program.
Students interested in our combined-degree program can obtain an application from the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Alcorn. Applications will then be evaluated by the graduate committee and Junior applicants will be informed of the committee's decision by April 30th.

Students who are already apart of the Honors Program need not apply because they are already accepted into the BA/MA Program when they are accepted into the Honors Program.

PEN/Faulkner and GW English

All three of these Spring 2013 PEN/Faulkner events have a connection to GW English.  Author Dolen Perkins-Valdez is a 2003 GW English PhD, Lisa Page teaches in our Creative Writing Program, and PEN/Faulkner Award Nominee Thomas Mallon is Director of Creative Writing.  Although the reading with Dolen Perkins-Valdez has passed, come out this Saturday to a special reading with Terry McMillan moderated by Professor Page; and join in the celebration for Professor Mallon's nomination in May.

A Discussion with Aldon Nielsen: April, 19th 2013

"The Cry of my People:" Jazz, Poetry and the Black Arts

An alum from our very own English department, Aldon Nielsen received his PhD in American Literature from GW in 1985 and currently teaches as the George and Barbara Kelly Professor of American Literature at Penn State University.

Reading Race: White American Poets and the Racial Discourse in the Twentieth Century
Nielsen was the first recipient of the Larry Neal Award for poetry; his work was selected by John Ashbery for the Best American Poems anthology; and he has received two Gertrude Stein Awards for innovation. Nielsen has published five volumes in verse: Heat Strings, Evacuation Routes, Stepping Razor, VEXT, and Mixage. His first work of literary criticism, Reading Race, won the SAMLA Studies Prize and a Kayden Award for best book in the humanities. Other works of criticism include Writing Between the Lines: Race and Intertextuality, C.L.R. James: A Critical Introduction, Black Chant: Languages of African-American Postmodernism, and Integral Music: Languages of African American Innovation, winner of the Josephine Miles Award.

This event was made possible by the collaboration of the GW English Department and the American Literature and Culture Organization. ALCO brings an Americanist voice to the study of literature and culture by participating in a larger national, transnational and hemispheric discussion with students, faculty, and interested members of the community. Aldon Nielsen is one such Americanist voice and both ALCO and the English Department are honored to be his host.

Examining Violence against Women in India

Examining Violence against Women in India: Changes, Challenges, Futures

The panel's conversation will explore the many complexities of the situation of violence against women in India, and also allow for a discussion of it in a comparative frame, linking it to histories of violence in the United States or elsewhere. Speakers include cultural theorists, historians, practitioners in the field of gender and development.  This panel discussion hopes to initiate some deep rethinking on the shapes and forms of violence against women in India, and strategies for how we might stop it.  The issue of violence against women in India was catapulted into international visibility with the remarkable media coverage of the gang rape and murder of a young physiotherapy female student on a public bus in New Delhi on 16 December 2012.  As newspapers and TV channels picked up the story and presented it, unprecedented protests against this violence and the government’s failure to prevent it were organized on the streets by middle-class urban residents. Contrary to the popular image of “shining India” and rapid economic growth that recently has preoccupied Euro-American representations of India, this incident generated a critical discourse that essentially charged the land of Gandhi for failing to protect “its women.”  The panel hopes to have a genuine debate and dialogue about questions about gender in contemporary India; gender violence and the politics of its representation; strategies for challenging violence; transnational feminist approaches; the role of NGOs, the state and civil society institutions in sustaining or interrogating gender violence, among others.

Michael Palmer has lived in San Francisco for over forty years. He has published over twenty books of poetry, and has often collaborated with visual artists, choreographers, and composers such as Gerhard Richter and the Margaret Jenkins Dance CompanyHis most recent collection, Thread, was published by New Directions in 2011.
He has also translated work from French, Russian, and Portuguese. In addition to the 2006 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, Palmer's honors include two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Leila Wallace-Reader's Digest Writer's Award, a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, and the Shelley Memorial Prize from the Poetry Society of America. In 1999, he was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.
